Virginia EBT customers will begin receiving new chip-enabled EBT cards starting in Septiembre, providing an added layer of security to help protect SNAP benefits from fraud. The new cards use chip technology, making them more difficult for scammers to skim or clone than traditional magnetic stripe cards. 

While the transition to chip cards is an important step in preventing benefit theft, it's still essential for customers to stay alert. Scammers continue to target EBT cardholders by attempting to obtain card numbers and personal identification numbers (PINs) through text messages, phone calls, emails and other fraudulent tactics. Never share your EBT card number or PIN with anyone. 

To help keep your benefits secure: 

• Change your PIN regularly. 

• Use only the official ConnectEBT (en inglés) app, available free from the Apple App Store and Google Play. 

• Check your account balance and transaction history frequently through the ConnectEBT app or online portal. 

• Use the card lock/unlock feature in the ConnectEBT app to lock your card when it's not in use and unlock it before making a purchase. 

The Virginia Department of Social Services and the USDA continue to monitor EBT fraud and work to protect customers' benefits. Taking a few simple precautions — along with the added security of your new chip-enabled EBT card — can help reduce the risk of benefit theft.
