Protect Your Rights to Your Child

A father playing outside with his child. The Virginia Birth Father Registry is a free, confidential database maintained by the Virginia Department of Social Services that protects the rights of unmarried men to children they may have fathered. By voluntarily registering before or within 10 days of the child’s birth, a putative father can preserve his parental rights and ensure he is notified if the child is placed for adoption or enters foster care.

Don’t fade from your child’s story. Registering with the Virginia Birth Father Registry helps you protect yourself and stay connected — no matter what life looks like. It’s fast, private and gives you and your relatives the power to be present if you want to be.

It’s important to note that the registry does not establish paternity. Registration may support establishing paternity, but it does not begin the legal process.
